June 2008
Dear Members,
Thank you to the many members who participated in all the Chamber events this spring.  We certainly were busy.  I would like to thank Reading Co-operative Bank for hosting the Spring Fling.  We needed this after the long, cold winter.  We had a wonderful turn out for the Outstanding Citizen Awards Dinner and our First Annual Ladies' Night Out was a big success, raising over $2000 for the Holiday Lighting Fund.   The Chamber also participated in a multi-chamber event in Waltham and a Women in Business event in Stoneham.
As summer approaches we will be keeping an eye on the next phases of the Reading Downtown Renovation project and the recommended Wastewater and Storm Water Treatment Plan for North Reading.  These important issues will impact our business communities.
If you are in Reading on June 21, please stop by the Chamber booth at Reading Friends & Family Day from 11 am - 4 pm to say hello.   As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
Sincerely,
Irene Collins
Executive Director
Outstanding Citizens of the Year
Arnold Rubin and Mark Hall were honored as the Reading-North Reading Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizens of the Year at an awards dinner on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at the Hillview Country Club in North Reading.  Both men were selected because of their exceptional contributions to the local business economy and community.
Chamber Secretary Debby Small was recoginzed as Chamber Person of the year.  Other honorees were Firefighter Brian Ryan and  Sgt. Mark O'Brien as Outstanding Firefighter and Police Officer from Reading.  Congratulations to all!

Aid for Business in Stimulus Package

New economic stimulus legislation, which passed by Congress in February, will positively impact businesses.  The legislation helps in two ways.  Companies will receive a 50 percent bonus deduction on new equipment that would normally be depreciated over many years. It also increases the limit on expenses that a small business can deduct from annual income from $128,000 to $250,000 in 2008, with a total cap of $800,000.
Furthermore, instead of depreciating the cost over a longer period, the family-run business can deduct 50 percent of the total cost this year and the normal depreciation of the remaining cost.  Talk to your tax advisor to see if your business is eligible to take advantage of the new provisions.
Quarterly Meeting
The Chamber will hold its Quarterly Meeting on June 25, 2008 at the LongHorn Steak House, 39 Walkers Brook Drive in Reading.
Guest speakers will be Representative Bradley H. Jones, Jr. who will discuss Massachusetts' fiscal economic outlook and what is being done to assist small businesses at the state level.  Also presenting is DPW Utilities Superintendent, Mark Clark from North Reading.  He will talk about North Reading's recommended wastewater and storm water plan.  A continental breakfast will be served.
Cost is $10 members/$15 non-members.
A form can be found on the Chamber website www.readingnreadingchamber.org or by calling Executive Director Irene Collins at    978-664-5060.
